Overview

Medical Silicone Scar Sheets & Topical Gels

Medical silicone is the most widely recommended first line option for managing raised (hypertrophic) and keloid prone scars. Worn on a closed, healed wound, it hydrates the scar and regulates moisture, which calms excess collagen production, and over the following weeks the scar typically becomes flatter, softer and less red.

Gel or sheets? Silicone sheets suit larger, flat areas that sit under clothing, such as the tummy, chest and shoulder, while the clear gel suits the face, joints and visible skin, drying quickly under sunscreen or make up. Either form is used consistently for 8 to 12 weeks or longer, and newer scars respond fastest, though older scars can still improve.

Silicone is also a popular choice for caesarean or c-section scars. Once the incision has fully closed, a silicone sheet or gel worn over the scar helps it fade, flatten and soften over the following weeks, which is why many mothers use it as part of recovery. See our postpartum recovery range for compression support that pairs with silicone scar care.

Skin that scars easily, including skin that is prone to keloids, is common across the UAE and the wider region. Raised and keloid scars can follow surgery, injury or even minor wounds, and medical silicone is the recommended first step for calming them. For stubborn or established keloids, our specialists can advise whether silicone alone is enough or whether added pressure therapy would help.

Start once your surgeon confirms the incision has fully closed, and protect fresh scars from the sun. See our guide to SPF for healing scars. For pressure based scar care, browse the full burn and scar range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Silicone gel or silicone sheets — which should I choose?
Both work the same way. Sheets are practical for larger, flat scars that sit under clothing (tummy tuck, chest, shoulder). The clear gel is better for the face, joints and visible areas — it dries fast and can be worn under sunscreen or make-up.
When can I start silicone treatment after surgery?
Only once the wound has fully closed and any stitches or scabs are gone — usually around two to three weeks after surgery. Ask your surgeon to confirm the incision is ready before you start.
How long does silicone take to work on a scar?
Plan for consistent daily use over 8–12 weeks; many people continue for several months on thicker scars. Improvement is gradual — the scar slowly flattens, softens and loses redness.
Does silicone work on old scars?
New scars (under a year old) respond best, but older raised scars can still soften and fade with consistent use over a longer period. Deep, mature keloids may need combined treatment — ask your dermatologist.
