A mesh laundry net holds the garment inside the drum so it cannot snag on zips, hooks or the machine itself, and it stops the fabric being pulled and stretched during the cycle. Because the compression comes from the elastic fibres in the knit, protecting the shape of the garment is what protects the pressure it delivers. It is a small step that helps a stocking or sleeve stay as it was fitted for longer.

Machine wash at 40 C on a gentle cycle, inside a mesh laundry bag, using a detergent made for compression garments. Do not use fabric softener, do not tumble dry and do not iron — heat and softener break down the elastic fibres, and once those are gone the compression is gone with them. If you wear a garment daily, having a second one makes it easier to keep to this routine.

The bristles sweep away dead skin, while the nodules are designed to stimulate the skin in support of circulation and lymphatic drainage. A medical compression garment typically gives 4 to 6 months of daily wear before the fabric stops compressing properly, so replacing about every six months is normal. Washing correctly in a laundry net, avoiding heat and fabric softener, and not dragging the garment on by its top band all help you reach the end of that window rather than falling short of it. Care accessories extend the working life of a garment; they do not replace it.
