Suncare & SPF Protection for Healing Scars
Sun protection for a healing scar
New scar tissue has almost no protection of its own. Exposed to ultraviolet light it darkens, and that pigmentation can stay long after the scar itself has settled, which is why sun protection is part of scar therapy rather than an optional extra. The same is true of a fresh tattoo.
What to use, and for how long
A broad-spectrum SPF 50+ cream, applied to the closed, healed scar whenever it will be uncovered outdoors, and reapplied through the day. Keep it up for at least the first twelve months, which is roughly how long a scar goes on remodelling and staying photosensitive. Under a compression garment the scar is already shaded, so protection matters most on the skin that is left exposed.
Alongside your other scar care
Sun protection sits next to silicone sheets, scar pads and compression, not instead of them. Apply sunscreen to skin that is fully closed; while a wound is still healing, follow your clinician's instructions instead, and keep the area covered.
